In January 2019, the Faculty of Architecture at Chulalongkorn University made significant strides in architectural education through a collaboration led by Asst. Prof. Atch Sreshthaputra, Ph.D. As a key figure on the Executive Committee of the Thai Green Building Institute, Dr. Atch introduced and implemented scSTREAM, a structure-based solver for thermal analysis, into the curriculum for the Master of Architecture program. This initiative represents a pivotal moment in enhancing the practical skills and knowledge of graduate students, particularly in the realms of architectural technology and innovation.

Project Overview

Dr. Atch Sreshthaputra, in collaboration with Cradle Consulting Thailand (CCT), has undertaken the task of developing comprehensive teaching materials throughout the semester. The goal is to familiarize students with scSTREAM, enabling them to confidently tackle various thermal and CFD challenges in their architectural studies.

This academic program is designed to produce graduates capable of developing their interests and research into independent design explorations. These explorations span multiple areas of study, including:

  • Architectural Design
  • Architectural Technology and Innovation
  • Architectural History
  • Theory and Criticism
  • Architectural Practice and Management

The integration of scSTREAM into the curriculum allows students to explore advanced computational methods, preparing them for the challenges of modern architectural design.

scSTREAM Software Features

scSTREAM is a sophisticated thermo-fluid analysis software, well-regarded in both the electronics and architectural industries. Its implementation in the Master of Architecture program at Chulalongkorn University provides students with hands-on experience in using cutting-edge technology to solve real-world architectural problems.

Key Features of scSTREAM:

  • Structured Mesh Technology:
Enables detailed control over grid size and resolution, crucial for accurate simulations of airflow and temperature distribution in architectural spaces.
  • High-Speed Processing:
scSTREAM’s capability to process large-scale simulations rapidly is essential for projects requiring multiple design iterations.
  • Visual Outputs:
The software generates high-quality visualizations, ideal for presenting findings and communicating complex data to stakeholders.

Application in Education

The introduction of scSTREAM in the Master of Architecture program has allowed students to engage deeply with the practical aspects of thermal analysis in architecture. Dr. Atch Sreshthaputra’s course incorporates scSTREAM to simulate various environmental conditions, helping students understand how design elements such as:

  • Window Placement
  • Insulation Materials
  • HVAC Configurations

affect the overall thermal comfort and energy efficiency of buildings.

Notable Educational Outcomes:

  • Balancing Natural Ventilation and Mechanical Cooling:
Students learned to identify design strategies that reduce the reliance on air conditioning, enhancing sustainability while maintaining comfort.
  • Innovative Design Exploration:
The course encouraged the exploration of passive cooling techniques and strategic thermal mass placement, equipping students with the tools to develop forward-thinking architectural solutions.

The visual outputs generated by scSTREAM have been instrumental in helping students visualize the impact of their design choices, making the learning experience both engaging and effective.

Conclusion

The collaboration between Asst. Prof. Atch Sreshthaputra and CCT at Chulalongkorn University marks a significant advancement in architectural education. By integrating scSTREAM into the Master of Architecture curriculum, the faculty is not only enhancing the technical skills of its students but also fostering a deeper understanding of sustainable and innovative architectural practices. As the field of architecture continues to evolve, the use of advanced simulation tools like scSTREAM will play an increasingly important role in shaping the next generation of architects.
